Days before one of the biggest travel days of the year, Trump announced that he was withdrawing a plan requiring airlines to compensate passengers when US flights are disrupted at the fault of carriers – up to $775 for longer delays – because it was an “unnecessary regulatory burden.”
This rule was proposed under President Biden, after Southwest Airlines canceled nearly 17,000 flights around the year-end holidays in 2022, leaving two million passengers stranded. The U.S. Department of Transportation announced a $140 million civil penalty against the airline, with the majority of the penalty going to compensate passengers affected by cancellations or delays.
As reported by CNN, Trump is also working to rescind regulations that airlines must disclose service fees, make it harder for consumers to get ticket refunds when a flight is cancelled, and revisit rules on ticket pricing and advertising.
Trump has only worked to make life more difficult for the American people. When he’s not building multi-billion dollar ballrooms, he’s attacking food assistance, enacting tariffs to increase the price of everyday goods, making healthcare premiums skyrocket, and now this. We must fight back.
