Our visit to the Kuruvungna Village Springs located at Uni High in honor of Native American Heritage Month.
Dear friends and partners,
There is so much to be grateful for as we head into Thanksgiving week. As I celebrate my first Thanksgiving as a father this year, I am more in awe than ever of the support our families and staff provide to LAUSD’s children. I continue to meet with parents across Board District 4 to find ways to make their lives easier, including with a resolution ([link removed]) that passed unanimously this week to make it easier for parent and community groups to find and use District spaces, and an ongoing survey of parents ([link removed]) to implement my previous resolution to digitize cumbersome paper forms.
I’m also grateful that our students continue to show academic gains, like the test scores the Board reviewed this week showing the progress of English Learners significantly outpacing the state. And I was grateful to see so much joy as schools across the District celebrated Kindness Week last week.
While grateful, I’m not satisfied. There is still so much work to do, and while the District faces challenging budgetary conversations in the coming months, I remain committed to keeping students centered in my decision-making.
Onward,

In the Community: The Latest from Board District 4
This month, my team and I met with both my Teacher Advisory Group and Youth Advisory Council to hear directly from educators and students about their priorities. We joined the Playa Venice Sunrise Rotary Club’s annual cultural dinner, cheered on our local teams at the Pali High vs. Fairfax High football game, and celebrated Halloween with visits to Richland ES, Walgrove ES, and Brockton ES. In honor of Native American Heritage Month, we also visited the Kuruvungna Village Springs at University High to learn more about the sacred site and its history. Additionally, we spent time at several schools across BD4, including ICEF Vista MS, Magnolia Science Academy 4, and Citizens of the World Mar Vista ES. It’s always inspiring to see the energy and dedication across our BD4 communities!
In the Spotlight: Amanda Achen from Pali Elementary
This November, we proudly celebrated School Psychology Week by recognizing outstanding professionals who support the well-being of our students every day, including Amanda Achen, who has dedicated 19 years to the Palisades Charter Elementary community. In addition to her work as a school psychologist, she serves on the crisis and instructional leadership teams, helping drive critical social-emotional and instructional initiatives. Following the Palisades wildfires, Ms. Achen played an essential role in the school’s crisis response—supporting recovery, ensuring safety, and connecting families with vital resources. We are grateful for her unwavering commitment to students, families, and the community!
