John, instead of rising to meet the moment, Speaker Mike Johnson is joining Donald Trump in the muck.
When asked about Trump's outburst against Democratic lawmakers, Johnson tried to shift the blame to his colleagues, made excuses for the President's death threat, then changed the subject. [1]
Trump is creating this controversy so he can ratchet up tensions, intimidate his opponents, and distract from his own failures.
Add your name now – let's speak out with one voice to say our country is better than this, and condemn political violence in all its forms.
For more information on Trump's disgusting rhetoric – and why we must speak out now – you can read our full email below from yesterday:
SIGN NOW: Donald Trump’s death threats against Democratic lawmakers are inexcusable, and members of Congress must condemn political violence with one voice. Can you add your name today?
John, this morning, Trump accused multiple Democratic lawmakers of “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!” – then reshared a post that called for them to be hanged. [2]
Donald Trump is now making explicit death threats against Democrats in Congress.
We need to be better than this. America should be a place where we resolve our differences peacefully through the democratic process – it’s fundamental to who we are as a people.
So, here’s the big question: will leaders in Congress stand by while Trump issues death threats against their own colleagues? Or will they do the right thing and condemn all political violence – no matter who’s behind it?
Tell Speaker Mike Johnson and Majority Leader John Thune: Trump’s threats on your colleagues can’t go unanswered. Demand they disavow all political violence today >>
I’m simply appalled. The President should be trying to tamp down the flames of political violence – and instead he's stoking them.
It’s straight out of the dictator’s playbook. Comments like this, combined with his selective pardons for January 6th insurrectionists and his multi-front attacks on our right to dissent, send a chilling message.
We don’t have to let this happen. And neither do our elected leaders.
We should be able to debate and disagree fiercely without resorting to threats or violence. Our democracy only works when people can participate freely without fear hanging over them. And our leaders in Congress need to make it clear that they agree.
Add your name to tell Mike Johnson and John Thune that all Americans – Republicans, Democrats, and Independents – are looking to you to lead right now. Condemn Trump’s disgusting rhetoric and show that violence has no place here >>
This is a time for bold leadership, and right now, we urgently need your voice to demand it.
Thanks for all you do,
The team at Common Cause
