John,
Your activism isn’t just pressuring lawmakers to tackle the most pressing issues impacting our communities―it’s also powering our nationwide movement for change.
Last month, we heard from members of Congress and from health care advocates that one of the most impactful ways to pressure Congress to extend expiring ACA tax credits is for families to tell their personal stories. But ally after ally told CHN that they simply didn’t have those stories.
We responded immediately, turning to our national supporters, asking you to share how rising health care costs―particularly on the ACA marketplace―are impacting your family and your household budget.
Thanks to you, we collected hundreds of detailed stories that we have since shared with lawmakers, with civil rights advocates, and with the media. Some of these stories are already being used to generate videos on social media, bringing real people’s stories on the health care affordability crisis to millions of people across the country.
A supporter from Longview, Washington told CHN:
“My husband is a year out from being on Medicare. He gets his healthcare through the ACA. It went from $250 a month to $550 a month last year. Now it will go up to $2,560 a month and that is before any medical bills. With the cost of everything how can people afford that? My husband takes Eliquis to avoid blood clots. We are very worried now.”
A resident of Red Rock, Arizona shared this:
“My husband’s ACA health plan premium is increasing from $300 to $1300 per month. There is no way we can afford this, so he will have no insurance next year. We are terrified.”
Those are just two of the hundreds of stories you shared. Thank you for trusting us with your voice. And thank you for powering our movement for change.
