At the conference, Karaikal District Fisherwomen Federation President (Present) Sumathi shared,
“The ocean is our habitat. The ocean is our resource. The shore is an intrinsic part of our lives.”
While the oceans are essential to the livelihoods of fisherpeoples, movement leaders shared how the model of conservation currently being promoted by United Nations agencies has led to greater control of oceans by corporations. The system that divides oceans and fishing stocks to the highest bids has further marginalized fishing communities and degraded marine ecosystems.
WFFP has been leading the struggle to ensure that fisherpeoples can still maintain their livelihoods.
Grassroots International is honored to accompany the critical work of the World Forum of Fisher Peoples.
As Nadine Nembhard, co-chair of the World Forum of Fisher Peoples, shared at our Solidarity Philanthropy Praxis Retreat,
“Our relationship with Grassroots International has been a partnership developed over the years. Solidarity philanthropy merges with the social movements. For us to exist, we need to have a relationship with philanthropy and understand the operations so that we can bring benefits to the people that we represent.”
