“Seditious behavior, punishable by death.”
That’s what Donald Trump had to say after a group of Democratic Senators
and Representatives shared a video explaining that service members could
disobey unlawful orders.
John xxxxxx, I took an
oath to uphold the Constitution and to follow only lawful orders. So did
Senators Slotkin and Kelly and Representatives Crow, Deluzio, Goodlander,
and Houlahan, who the President attacked for stating the facts. So did
Trump, even if he ignores it.
The fact that this was “lost” on a draft-dodger who has never worn
anything but a Brooks Brothers suit is not surprising. But his attacks on
veterans who have continued their service to this country fuels political
violence and has to be condemned.
And the silence from veterans in his inner circle like JD Vance and Pete
Hegseth is telling. People who wrap themselves in the flag until it’s
actually time to step up and say something might have forgotten their
oath.
It’s part of a pattern. Trump and his buddies lay off federal workers —
many of them veterans — and gut public service.
They claim women shouldn’t serve and shut down the government, putting
military paychecks at risk.
They treat veterans like props and elevate people to lead them who think
filming videos on a pull-up bar is patriotism.
John xxxxxx, they don’t
respect the people who raise their hands to serve. That’s unacceptable.
I will always protect the people I took an oath to serve. Whether it’s the
oath I swore as governor to serve the people of Maryland or the one as a
servicemember to protect everyone in this country, those oaths matter to
me.
