High Court approves abortion for minor evoking memories of tragic C Case
Late last week, reports surfaced that the High Court had granted an application submitted by the HSE a month ago to terminate the pregnancy of a minor after concluding that she was not capable of making the decision herself.
The HSE submitted the application in October after mental health specialists argued that the continuation of the pregnancy posed a risk to the teenager’s life.
The ruling was made when the girl, who is residing at an IPAS centre, was 14 weeks pregnant, placing her past the 12-week period during which abortions are permitted for any reason.
It was claimed in the application that the teenager had made a number of threats to harm herself if the pregnancy wasn’t ended.

Deputy O’Flynn
Deputy O’Flynn calls for urgent adoption of protocols to protect babies that survive late-term abortions
Independent Ireland TD Ken O’Flynn has said it’s “not acceptable” that Ireland has “no public guidance” or proper reporting system in situations where a baby is born alive following an abortion.
Deputy O’Flynn said it has been confirmed in replies he recently received to a number of Parliamentary Questions that “no clinical protocols or national standards are in place.” He described the situation as “an extraordinary governance failure in an area where clarity, professionalism and compassion are essential.”
He has called on the Government to take three immediate steps: Publish national clinical guidance for all hospitals setting out the standard of care that should be afforded to babies that survive an abortion; establish a national reporting requirement to maintain transparency and ensure accountability; release the number of cases where a baby has survived an abortion since 2019.

Push underway in Scotland to make sex-selective abortion legal up to birth
Sex-selective abortion may become legal in Scotland under proposals from a government-commissioned review of abortion law, carried out by a panel chaired by a former trustee of the UK’s largest abortion provider.
Commissioned by Humza Yousaf when he served as Scottish First Minister, the report states that “no specific reference is made to sex-selective abortion within any revised abortion law,” thereby preventing the inclusion of measures that would prohibit the practice.
Because some parents and cultures prioritise having boys, sex-selective abortion disproportionately results in targeting the lives of unborn baby girls.
The report further proposes removing all specified grounds for abortion up to 24 weeks, effectively allowing abortion for any reason and thereby permitting sex-selective abortions.
Commenting on the latest developments, Catherine Robinson, spokesperson for Right To Life UK, said: “It is extremely worrying that sex-selective abortion could be legalised in Scotland as part of these harmful recommendations. This report is one of the most extreme in UK parliamentary history, drawn up by radical activists whose views do not align with public opinion. What is being suggested is an extreme and inhumane change to the law, which polling shows is widely opposed by women”.
