John, yes, you read that right. Our President, our Commander in Chief, called me a traitor earlier today and said that I should be executed.

On the one hand, this is very scary. I am increasing security for me, my family and my staff. I am changing my schedule so I don’t put others in harm’s way. I am figuring out how to form a legal defense fund in case I am arrested.

On the other hand, I am resolute. I am even emboldened; confident I am on the right side of law and history. As one of my colleagues said to me today, “If Trump wants you dead, you must be doing something right.” Honestly, it’s hard to believe this is really happening.

Why are we here? Because I released a video, with five of my national security colleagues, telling members of our military that they don’t have to follow orders that are illegal. That their oath, like mine, is to the Constitution. And that we have their backs.

President Trump’s response clearly shows why this message was important and timely. He doesn’t care about the law. He’s using the power of the office to get rich, settle scores, and destroy our democratic values and institutions.

I refuse to let Donald Trump, a man who himself attempted to overthrow our government on Jan. 6, tell me how to serve this country or how to uphold the rule of law.
