Disaster relief loans
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is reminding Minnesota small businesses, nonprofits, homeowners, and renters that the deadline to apply for low-interest federal disaster loans is December 1, 2025. These loans help cover physical damage from the July 27 - 28, 2025 storms and flooding in Big Stone, Douglas, Grant, Pope, Stevens, Swift, and Traverse counties. Eligible applicants can receive up to $2 million for business losses, $500,000 for home repairs, and $100,000 for personal property. Loan increases of up to 20% are available for mitigation improvements to reduce future storm damage. For details or to apply, contact the SBA at 1-800-659-2955, email

Fraud Awareness and Prevention Week reminders
In recognition of Fraud Awareness and Prevention Week [ [link removed] ], we’re highlighting the important issue of insurance fraud. Here are some ways fraud can make your insurance policy a target:
* Medical policy and medical identity theft
* AI-enhanced phishing & vishing (voice phishing)
* Fake contractors after a natural disaster
* Fake insurance agents, or ghost brokering scams
Don’t rely on everyone else to solve this growing problem. Each of us has a crucial role to play in protecting ourselves and our communities. Stay informed, be skeptical, protect your information and monitor your accounts.
If you suspect fraud, report it to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension at 651-793-3750 or
[email protected]. Stay alert. Stay safe.

Bitcoin
DOJ seizes $15B in Bitcoin scam
In one of the largest cryptocurrency fraud cases ever, the U.S. Department of Justice seized over $15 billion in bitcoin tied to a global relationship confidence scam— sometimes called a “pig butchering scam” — a type of fraud where victims are emotionally manipulated into investing in fake crypto platforms.
These scams often start with a friendly message on social media or dating apps, slowly building trust before introducing a “can’t-miss” investment opportunity. Victims are lured in with fake profits before their money is stolen.
How to protect yourself:
* Be skeptical of unsolicited messages from strangers.
* Never invest in platforms you haven’t verified.
* Don’t send money or crypto to someone you’ve never met in person.
* Report suspicious activity.
