Dear John, Children are resilient, but conflict and upheaval can be exceptionally hard for them, especially when that means getting through the bitter winter without a proper home. But in Bamyan, one of Afghanistan’s coldest provinces, children are finding joy through a community centre built with support from UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. The centre, which is managed by the local community, provides a range of learning opportunities, including English, computer literacy, mathematics, and supplementary schooling for children who have been forced to flee due to violence and conflict. With around 400 students, most of them girls unable to continue formal education beyond grade six, the centre has become a vital hub of hope. We talked to some of the children, who told us about their favourite hobbies, classes and food, as well as the harsh realities of winter. |
