John,
In July, Congress came close to passing a provision that would wipe out every state law regulating artificial intelligence and social media recommendation algorithms for the next decade. Your voice — and others like it — helped put it to a stop.
We won that round. Now they’re back for more.
A small group of senators is trying again — this time by inserting a similar ban into the National Defense Authorization Act, a must-pass bill. [1] Their proposal would block states from enforcing basic consumer protections on AI. That means the lawmakers in your state who are working to protect you and your family from price discrimination, deepfake impersonation, discrimination, and threats to kids’ safety would be forced to stand down.
If the bill passes with the provision included, it would:
- Wipeout hundreds of state consumer safety laws that protect Americans against AI scams, child sexual abuse material, election deepfakes, and more.
- Block all state-level AI regulation and kill more than 1,000 existing laws protecting you and your family.
- Give tech giants a blank check to experiment on Americans — without any oversight.
Write to your senators to tell them to oppose a ban on state AI laws!
To make matters worse, President Trump is expected to issue an executive order tomorrow directing the Department of Justice to sue states with consumer-protection laws, and to pull essential broadband funds that support hospitals, schools, and local governments.
This is a rapid and coordinated attack on states’ rights and on the tools communities use to hold Big Tech accountable.
Collective action helped put a stop to this provision last time — and we can do it again with your help! Write to your senators now and tell them to reject any ban on state AI regulation.
Thanks for all you do, The Issue One Action Team
