Friends — This is not a joke. Trump just shared a call on social media to arrest and execute Democratic members of Congress.
Let me explain.
Recently, a brave group of Democratic House members and Senators who have served our country in the military made a video directed at members of the US armed forces, reminding them that they have no obligation to follow illegal orders.
Illegal orders like, say, Trump telling troops to fire live rounds at unarmed protesters in US cities. Or orders for unconstitutional and internationally illegal airstrikes on foreign countries.
And the message of that video is completely, unambiguously true. US troops have no obligation to break the law if ordered to by the President or anyone else in the chain of command.
But that didn’t stop Trump from having a meltdown. First he posted this:
Then he reposted this call to hang Democratic members of Congress:
Then, to eliminate any doubt, Trump repeated the call for the death penalty this morning:
To say that this rhetoric is dangerous and unacceptable is a massive understatement.
We saw on January 6th what happens when Trump encourages the extremists in his base to commit mob violence. These fresh calls put a target on the backs of every one of those Democratic members of Congress at a time when our leaders should be toning down the rhetoric, not throwing lighter fluid on the fire.
But today I am reminded of an old saying: “A cornered animal is almost as dangerous as a wounded one.”
Trump is cornered. He is hemorrhaging support. Americans know he hasn’t done a single thing to make their lives better and more affordable. Even his own voters are turning on him for his involvement with Jeffrey Epstein.
With the walls closing in, Trump is lashing out and becoming even more extreme. It’s our job to continue to fight back and defeat the far-right at the ballot box, from city halls to statehouses to Congress.
Our progressive movement will not be deterred by threats. We will not bend the knee to Trump, even as he threatens the very lives of our colleagues. If you’re with me, please:
