John,
This week, Democrats in Congress demonstrated how they can force a vote in the House, even when Speaker Johnson is standing in the way―using a discharge petition to force the release of the Epstein files. Now, there’s another issue they’re trying to force the House to take up: affordable health care.
With enhanced Affordable Care Act premium tax credits expiring in just over a month, Leader Hakeem Jeffries has introduced a discharge petition to extend the ACA subsidies for three years. He already has over 200 signers.1 He needs 218, so just a few more.

Right now, tens of millions of people are logging onto the ACA Marketplace to find that their monthly premiums for next year have more than doubled. Without these credits, a family of four earning $66,000 would see their annual premium jump from $1,452 in 2025 to $4,477 in 2026, on average (up 208%). A 60-year-old couple with an income of $64,000 would see their premium increase from $3,872 to $6,374 (up 65% percent).2
It’s estimated that 4 million people will lose their health insurance altogether because they simply can’t afford the whopping increase.3
When Republicans passed their Big Brutal Budget, they enshrined permanent tax breaks on billionaires while allowing the ACA enhanced tax credits to expire at the end of this year, at tremendous cost for tens of millions of Americans. They also made the largest cuts to Medicaid and SNAP in the programs’ histories, taking health care and nutrition assistance away from vulnerable people. At a time when so many are struggling with the costs of basic needs, it is outrageous that Republicans are making it even harder to make ends meet―and then putting forward proposals that don’t help people afford care while driving up costs further to funnel money to insurance companies and big banks.4
Republicans have promised Democrats a vote in the Senate on extending ACA subsidies. But no such promise exists in the House―which is why we need to force their hand.

Together, we’re holding Congress accountable to the American people, fighting for affordable, accessible health care for all.
