Thanks to Tribal leadership—and your advocacy—Congress permanently established the Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership (ORLP) and expanded eligibility to Tribes, Tribal organizations, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiian organizations. Now, we need to get this over the finish line. Tell Congress: Fully fund ORLP and help expand access to the outdoors for everyone.

Together with the Penobscot Nation, we’re partnering to transfer nearly 30,000 acres—one of the largest land returns—and expand access to Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. This Native American Heritage Month, we honor Tribal nations’ enduring stewardship of these places.

Indigenous knowledge plays a critical role in land management. But it should be incorporated more, a reality TPL is working toward. In this excerpted portion of a panel discussion from the annual Mountainfilm festival in Colorado, TPL’s Tribal and Indigenous Lands director, Dr. Ken Lucero, explores the topic with former U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland and other prominent voices.
|
That commitment to elevating Indigenous knowledge was also reflected in a recent partnership between TPL and Milkweed Editions to convene a powerful conversation between 24th U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón and author Robin Wall Kimmerer. Their sold-out dialogue explored themes of reciprocity, resilience, and our shared relationship with the natural world. Dr. Ken Lucero offered reflections that centered Indigenous stewardship and community leadership.

Last month, TPL asked: What’s a surprising or creative way you’ve enjoyed your local park in cooler weather?

We're creating a new community schoolyard at one of this state's first Indigenous charter schools. This school serves as a vital cultural hub for its community with a gathering space featuring walking trails, medicinal plants, gardens, and more. Can you guess in which state we're doing this incredible work?
|
🏫 Hint 1: It will be the first Tribal schoolyard in this state.
🐟 Hint 2: The school is near one of the largest freshwater lakes in the country wholly contained within one state.
🌾 Hint 3: The official state grain is "wildly" popular in soups and boasts cultural significance to the Obijwe people.
