Dear John,

I’m reflecting on all I’m grateful for in nature—clean air, fresh water, and everyday items like medicine and coffee. And for decades, Congress has invested in nature by restoring habitats, protecting endangered species, and supporting conservation projects around the world.

But these protections aren’t guaranteed. As we give thanks for nature this holiday season, let’s make sure Congress continues investing in the policies and programs that protect our natural resources.

Nature is essential to everything you and I care about:

• Our economy. From tourism to agriculture and wood products, nature sustains economic growth and creates good jobs for American workers and businesses.

• Our health. Nature gives us clean drinking water and filters the air we breathe. It’s the source of countless life-saving medicines. Time outdoors improves our mental health and keeps our communities stronger.

• Our safety. Healthy forests reduce wildfire risks. Coastal vegetation prevents erosion. When we protect nature, we protect ourselves from increasingly severe weather events and natural disasters.
