As we’re heading into the holiday season, I want to give you a quick update on what I’ve been up to this fall and where we’re headed as we prepare for the 2026 Legislative Session. 

Last week, I was proud to welcome bipartisan members of the House Capital Investment Committee to visit our district and hear infrastructure project proposals from local leaders. We talked about funding much-needed improvements in Minnetonka’s fire department infrastructure, and funding the final phase of the Wayzata Lakefront redevelopment. 

In my last legislative update, I shared the DFL’s proposals on gun violence prevention measures. Though we put forward legislative solutions in good faith, it soon became clear that the special legislative session on gun violence prevention that Minnesotans, including many from our district, were calling for this fall would never materialize.  

However, that doesn’t mean this issue goes away - far from it. When we return to our regular work in February, these same proposals will still be brought forward, and I’ll be joining my colleagues in pushing for their passage.  

Much of what we’re putting forward simply builds on the success of existing laws, and I wanted to share the resources available to our community as it pertains to Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs).  

The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office now houses a specialist who can discuss and support family or household members who have concerns that a loved one is a significant risk to themselves or others with a firearm. If you have concerns about a loved one and firearms, please reach out at 612-348-5073 and ask to speak to an Extreme Risk Protection Order Specialist. 

As we head into colder weather, I want to remind you of the resources available to ensure that all Minnesotans stay warm and are protected from utility service shut-offs. 

Minnesota’s Cold Weather Rule is in effect from October 1 to April 30, protecting residential utility customers from having their electric or natural gas service shut off. To protect your service from disconnection, you must make and keep a reasonable payment plan that you and your utility agree on. You can set up a payment plan any time during the rule season.

Minnesota’s Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps ensure that struggling Minnesota families can afford their energy. Both renters and homeowners can qualify to receive funding to help cover energy costs, and eligibility is based on income and household size.  

LIHEAP is federally funded and administered by the Department of Commerce, which works with local service providers throughout the state. While the government shutdown is now over, LIHEAP is still waiting for federal funding for this program year. Most benefits cannot be issued until that funding is received. However, they are accepting applications and encourage you to apply. You can find more information here.
