Donald Trump just rolled out the red carpet for Mohammed bin Salman at the White House. This is the man who ordered the torture and murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Jamal was killed for speaking the truth about the Saudi royal family.

I know what it means to confront real brutality. As a young attorney, I helped track down and bring to justice the man who tortured and murdered Victor Jara in Chile. Victor was a folk singer who refused to be silenced under the Pinochet dictatorship. 

I have stood up to torturers and murderers before. I stood by the widow who spent half a lifetime fighting for justice. And I will do it again. These times call for tough leaders who have been tested the way I have been.

In 2021, the CIA assessed that Prince bin Salman ordered Khashoggi’s murder. Yet again, Trump has chosen to side with another murderous anti-freedom right wing dictator instead of standing up for American values and basic human rights. 

But Trump went the extra mile for his Saudi business partner—claiming that Khashoggi was "extremely controversial” and, regarding Khashoggi’s murder, that “things happen.”

I have taken on thugs like the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin-Salman. Men like MBS and Victor Jara’s murderer are cowards. They cover up their evil deeds with corruption, building alliances with other powerful and corrupt men who have their own evil deeds to cover up. 

This vicious cycle feeds on itself until justice is demanded by the people and by our leaders. Human rights is the foundation on which peaceful societies exist. Our rights and freedoms are non-negotiable. 

It is my life’s work to defend what makes America great: freedom, the rule of law, civil rights. And right now, these values are under attack like never before.
