LULAC CELEBRATES FEDERAL COURT DECISION BLOCKING TEXAS REDISTRICTING MAP AS A WIN FOR VOTERS AND DEMOCRACY
Washington, DC - The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) today commended a three-judge federal panel in El Paso for blocking Texas' recently adopted congressional redistricting map. The court ruled 2–1 that the map drawn by the Republican-majority legislature violated core principles of fair representation and unlawfully diluted the voting strength of Latino communities across the state.
LULAC served as a plaintiff in the case, which was argued by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF). The organization applauds MALDEF's legal team and extends special recognition to Nina Perales, Vice-Presidency of Litigation, whose leadership and advocacy were instrumental in securing this outcome.
Roman Palomares, LULAC National President and Chairman of the Board "This court decision is a victory for the people of Texas and for every voter who has the right to determine who will govern them and who will shape the laws and policies of this state. It also has far-reaching consequences for who represents us in the halls of Congress.
Ray Mancera, LULAC National Vice-President for the Southwest “LULAC celebrates this ruling as a historic moment that protects Latino voters, safeguards fair congressional representation, and prevents partisan manipulation of district lines that could distort legislative power in Washington. This decision reinforces the principle that democracy works only when every voter is counted fairly and without political interference.”
Gabriel Rosales, Texas LULAC State Director "I am elated by today's court ruling. It affirms that the hard work we do every single day through our councils and districts matters. As we have always said, your voice is your vote. The power of the ballot cannot be watered down, cannot be weakened, and cannot be taken away by anyone. Today's outcome reinforces that principle, and we are very proud of this victory for the people of Texas."
Gloria Leal, LULAC General Counsel "State politics cannot and must not interfere with the will of the people of Texas. These judges weighed the legal evidence, studied the intended effects of gerrymandering our state's voting maps, and reached the conclusion that any reasonable observer would endorse—except those acting out of partisan self-interest. This ruling is in the best interest of the people of Texas, and we are encouraged to continue the important work LULAC carries out every day."
LULAC remains committed in its mission to defend voting rights across the country and to ensure that every community is represented with dignity, fairness, and equality.
