The children of Shelby County are the backbone of our community. When they thrive, our county thrives alongside them. And right now, we are failing too many of them.
It is unacceptable that so many children are shut out from the early education they need to succeed. Access to pre-K is often limited to families that meet narrow federal poverty guidelines. Everyone else is left wait-listed, turned away, or forced to choose between unaffordable private programs or no program at all. That is not a system designed to help working families. It is a system that makes life harder.
Every child in Shelby County deserves a strong start. We know universal pre-K works. Research shows that children who attend MSCS early childhood programs perform better in school and have higher literacy rates. We know what works. We simply have not invested in it at the scale our families deserve.

As a father of three girls in our Shelby County schools, I understand these challenges deeply. My daughter Myla has autism, and my wife and I fight every day to make sure she has the support she needs to learn and grow. But most families cannot shoulder that burden alone. They should not have to. A child’s future should not depend on their parents’ income, neighborhood, or resources.
That is why universal pre-K is one of the most important fights of our time. This is how we lift up every child. This is how we strengthen our schools. This is how we build a county where opportunity is real and shared.
As your Shelby County Mayor, I will fight to make high-quality pre-K available to all children, not just a few. But to turn this vision into reality, our campaign needs the strength of a people-powered movement.
