Hi John Nick here from HOPE not hate. I want to speak plainly about the government’s new asylum plans and why they worry me. We have spent months listening to people across the country and studying what exactly is driving Reform UK’s support. Our new polling spoke to more than eleven thousand Reform voters and it paints a clear picture. Reform’s voters are not a single bloc. Our mass polling shows that while some Reform voters are strongly anti-refugee, others are concerned about local pressures rather than immigration itself. People are worried about immigration for different reasons and they want solutions that help their communities. This matters. By mimicking Reform to win back support, the Labour Government is making a serious mistake. This race to the bottom emboldens Farage, punishes vulnerable people, amplifies racism, and undermines those working to hold communities together. The new asylum plans won't fix a broken system. They will trap people in limbo, push families into insecurity and make it harder to rebuild after fleeing violence and persecution. The fact that Tommy Robinson and Nigel Farage have welcomed the plans should ring alarm bells for Labour. Instead of pursuing genuine solutions, this performative cruelty helps no one but the far right. There is another path. Our research shows that large parts of Reform’s coalition can be reached through something far simpler: a fairer economy, strong public services, and leaders who actually listen. These voters are not unreachable. They want stability. They want things to work again. When people feel secure, communities grow stronger. This is how we build hope and how we push back against the far right.
