John,

We wanted to make sure you saw Brian's recent response to the announcement that SD Unified Schools would be online only to start the fall:

“I am disappointed that the SD Unified School District has delayed in-person student learning for the fall. Distance learning is no substitute to quality, in-person instruction. SD Unified acknowledges this in their statement, saying students will be impacted in 'ways that will take years for researchers to understand'. As a father and local official, it disheartens me to hear this: Parents should be given the option of in-person instruction.

All available data shows that children who do not have severe underlying conditions do not face meaningful health risks from COVID-19. Additionally, as recently reported in The Journal of Pediatrics, data shows that children seldom transmit the virus to either kids or other adults. SD Unified has been blessed with excellent teachers, and we absolutely want them to remain safe.

Given the scientific studies of COVID-19's impact on children — and the known benefits of in-person versus online schooling — San Diego county has the ability and the duty to create a plan that keeps everyone safe and provides students with the best possible education.

Our kids deserve a better effort; our parents are paying for and are demanding a better effort. Our community has many single parents who will be severely impacted by this policy — it's virtually impossible to work and provide educational oversight for a child during the day. Working parents rely on schools to support everyday routines and may also not have capacity to supplement their children’s education at home. It will take families years to recover.

I hope SD Unified will rethink this decision in the assessment on August 10th. Our kids deserve as much effort, creativity, and problem-solving ability as we can muster."

Brian is committed to leading from the front and he will continue to vocalize his opinions on the issues of the day. He will be on KUSI News this evening at 5:20pm to talk about the issue of reopening schools in the fall! If you don't get KUSI on your TV, you can live stream the interview here ([link removed]) . We hope you will tune in!
