Mississippi History Matters:
Scott Colom is a seventh-generation Mississippian, running for the U.S. Senate. He’s focused on putting our state first — so today, we’re lifting up Mississippi history that Cindy Hyde-Smith won’t tell you.

John, it’s Scott Colom.
As a son of Mississippi, I think often about the people who shaped our state’s history - and few have had a greater impact than Fannie Lou Hamer.
She was a sharecropper who became one of the most powerful voices in the Democratic Party. A woman who spoke truth to power with nothing but courage in her heart. Someone who forced this country to reckon with racial injustice — not with anger, but with moral clarity.
Her message was simple: Nobody’s free until everybody’s free.
And even though decades have passed since she led the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, many of the same challenges she fought against are still with us today.
Because the truth is, Republicans have spent those decades keeping Mississippi at the bottom.
- We still have some of the highest poverty rates in the country.
- Our state still suffers from a lack of good-paying job opportunities.
- And our healthcare system is still one of the worst in America - with hospitals closing and families being left behind, especially in our most impoverished areas.
Mississippi deserves better. Mississippi Matters.
And I believe we can do better — but only if we build a movement strong enough to break the old patterns that have held us back for generations.
Fannie Lou Hamer didn’t back down from the fight, and neither will we. This campaign isn’t powered by billionaires; it’s powered by grassroots supporters who believe Mississippi’s best days are still ahead.
So today, very humbly, I’m asking:
Will you chip in $7 or even $25 to help us continue the work that Fannie Lou Hamer started — and finally bring true opportunity to every community in Mississippi?
