This Giving Season, I write to you with an urgent appeal.
We are living in trying and perilous times as the Trump administration upends our constitutional democracy, dismantles the administrative state, ignores the checks and balances that are supposed to keep our republic from cannibalizing itself, and weaponizes the federal government against the people, families, and communities we serve every day.
The recent effort to withhold SNAP benefits from tens of millions of people during the government shutdown is just one example of this administration’s willingness to ignore the needs and well-being of NCLEJ’s clients and constituents. As longtime national leaders in SNAP delay litigation, we have been sounding the alarm and fighting against illegal barriers to access for these life-saving food benefits for decades. Even with the government shutdown over, millions around the country continue to face SNAP agency dysfunction that prevents them from accessing the benefits to which they are legally entitled. Thus, NCLEJ’s advocacy to expand SNAP benefits remains critical to combating rising food insecurity in the US.
In the context of this historic moment, NCLEJ’s work has become that much harder—and that much more essential.
Every year, Giving Tuesday unleashes the power of millions of people to transform their communities and amplify their social impact by giving back. This major day of action is one of the biggest fundraising days of the year for nonprofits, and with just two weeks to go, I’m urging you to make NCLEJ a priority in your charitable contributions.
While times are difficult, the NCLEJ staff has the expertise and determination to fight back against this administration’s extreme policies. Your donation will help us expand our team, take on more casework, and ultimately secure more legal victories for the poor and working-class communities we serve.
