Dear Treasury Secretary Bessent,

The other day, you said something I couldn’t ignore.

You were on Fox News defending President Trump’s comments that American workers aren’t skilled enough, and that we need to bring in trainers from other countries.

The host asked: “Do you understand the concern that some people have? ‘Hey, an American could have that job.’” You responded: “An American can’t have that job. Because we haven't built ships or semiconductors here for years.”

Guess what. Here in Washington’s 6th District, we build ships!

It’s too bad your work as a hedge fund manager never took you to beautiful Puget Sound. You would see ships built by American workers who were trained by other Americans, using expertise they learned in America.

Our state's maritime industry generates nearly $50 billion. That might not mean much to a billionaire like yourself, but it means a lot to us.

You should also talk to some of the workers at the School for Wooden Boats, at WSF’s Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility, or at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility — where workers spent weeks working without pay while Republicans shut down the government and went on vacation.
