Laura’s story is a testament to the profound way that clinical trials can change lives. Laura was diagnosed with epilepsy as a child. Medications failed to control her seizures and Laura endured countless of them at home and in school. She was evaluated for epilepsy surgery, but with the technology available in the early 1990s, doctors couldn’t pinpoint where the seizures started in the brain.
One day, Laura’s neurologist recommended her for an NIH clinical trial on the functional MRI (fMRI) test, changing the course of her life.

Thank you to everyone who participated in UNITE to CURE Epilepsy! This year, we featured Taking Flight grantee Dr. Rachel June Smith and her team of early career researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Neural Signal Processing and Modeling Lab. They are working to localize seizures and develop brain stimulation techniques that may one day change how we can treat focal epilepsy. Learn about each of their fascinating projects!

** Team CURE Epilepsy Spotlight on Cameron Dodd
------------------------------------------------------------
Ready, set, research! For Cameron, running a marathon wasn’t just a lifelong dream – it was a chance to create a brighter future. This fall, Cameron laced up her running shoes as part of Team CURE Epilepsy, completing the Chicago Marathon in honor of her younger sister, Stacy.
Stacy is 26 and developed epilepsy as an infant. In 2007, she was diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome. This disorder has profoundly affected Stacy’s life, causing developmental delays and severe, uncontrolled seizures.
As a member of Team CURE Epilepsy, Cameron raised over $7,500 to support pioneering epilepsy research, inspired by Stacy every step of the way.
“If and when you meet Stacy, you’d never know the struggles she’s endured. She is the most happy-go-lucky gal. Her beautiful blue eyes and her wonderful, infectious smile will melt your heart. Stacy is the best sister I could ever ask for - and I feel so lucky to be running for her.”
