Dear
John,

For the first time in our nation's history, we are beginning to have tough and much needed conversations about racism and white supremacy.

The work of the Black Lives Matter movement has also led us to take action on fighting against not just racism but our country's other deep structural inequities, including misogyny, homophobia,
transphobia, and ableism.

But an appalling ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court last week and a malicious new rule dropped by the Trump administration last month shows that this administration and its backers are determined to continue a culture of discrimination.

On Wednesday, the Court ruled in favor of the Trump administration's latest effort to undermine the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and limit access to birth control. This ruling allows employers who have a "moral objection" to contraception, to deny birth control coverage to their workers.

The coronavirus pandemic has created huge challenges for parents who are struggling to care for children while working from home. Now more than ever we should be ensuring that all people have access to every available family planning option so they can make the best decisions about starting a family or growing their family.

The administration is continuing to discriminate against trans people, Black people, indigenous people, and people of color by denying them access to affordable health care.

Before the ACA, people could be denied any kind of health care just for being transgender or having had an abortion.

The section of the ACA known as the Health Care Rights Law helped change that by prohibiting discrimination in health care against women, the LGBTQ+ community, people with disabilities, people with limited English proficiency, and many others.

The Trump administration's new rule takes away these protections and opens the door for health care providers and insurers to deny care and mistreat patients.

It's plain old discrimination.

I assure you, these fights are not over,
John. We'll need your help in the coming months to right these egregious wrongs.

The National Partnership has been working on the very important issue of connecting Black maternal mortality and morbidity to access to reproductive health care. There is not enough attention being paid to this important connection. Please visit our Black Women's Maternal Health issue brief to learn more.
