I just introduced the No Torts for Trump Act, legislation to block Trump — and any future sitting president — from paying himself with Department of Justice funds, which also happen to be taxpayer dollars, for having to defend himself against valid charges of serious lawbreaking.
Let me explain: Trump is trying to get a $230 million payout (yes, MILLION) as a settlement from the DOJ, which would essentially be cutting himself a check with taxpayer dollars. As a penalty for the legitimate criminal investigations he faced, which he claims were an unfair “tort” against him. And the kicker, the ones who would approve of this payout are his former criminal defense lawyers whom he appointed to run the Justice Department.
That’s corruption, plain and simple.
John, this is not the first time Trump has tried to make a profit off the Oval Office.
Remember his meme coin? Or his countless official visits to Trump-branded golf courses? Or the vast Trump Family crypto ventures? Or the real estate deals with Gulf countries that want changes in U.S. policy in the region?
The core feature of Donald Trump’s presidency is corruption.
His latest get-rich-quick scheme, to have the Justice Department — run by his own former criminal defense lawyers — pay him hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars for an imaginary claim — is just another part of his playbook.
We can’t let that happen. My new bill will ensure taxpayers are not ripped off for the president’s benefit.
That should be common sense, but in this day and age, that common sense can be hard to come by.
