What does the sad and somewhat desperate compromise that ended the government shut down have to do with how I will spend my time as your next Texas Attorney General?

A lot, as it turns out.

The recent shutdown compromise ensured that Democratic AGs are going to have to keep suing the Trump administration. (Lucky for the nation, they are winning a lot of the time.)

That's because the deal that Senate Democrats made provides no way to stop Donald Trump from continuing to illegally override congressional budget appropriations. There's nothing in the compromise to stop Trump from stealing from all of us to make the obscenely rich even richer.

That means that as your AG, I'll have to keep suing the Trump administration, and I will.

At stake for Texans? Pretty much everything: funding for the social safety net, for research, education, infrastructure, and all things that Trump’s band of bandits don’t care about because they live in fortresses of infinite luxury, protection, and privilege.

I say it all the time — the Texas Attorney General is one of the most powerful offices in the state. The AG sets the agenda, deploys a huge budget and a giant staff with more than 600 staff attorneys. The office can do harm, as it has under Paxton. Or it can do extraordinary good in the hands of someone who wants to help Texans instead of executing an extremist ideological agenda. And it can use the law and our courts to stop Trump when he oversteps, as he so often does.
