The Coalition will put affordable power at the heart of Australia’s economic future.
Our plan will deliver a practical and balanced approach. We will use all of Australia’s energy strengths to bring down prices and support industry, while reducing emissions.
I know what it is like to be a mum at the kitchen table wondering how to stretch the family budget far enough.
And now, as a grandmother, I think about the world we are leaving to the next generation.
Under Labor, our children and grandchildren are facing worse living standards than we inherited.
We have a duty to fix this, to get energy costs down and to play our part in reducing emissions in a way Australians can afford.
Labor promised a $275 cut to power bills. Since they were elected, electricity bills have surged nearly 40 per cent.
Labor has spent more than $75 billion and has delivered higher prices.
Labor’s proposed 2035 target would require up to $530 billion in additional spending in the next decade. That is equivalent to $50,000 per household.
Labor missed their 2025 price target. How can Australians trust their 2050 emissions target?
Australia should be reducing emissions in line with the developed world, not racing ahead.
Since 2005, Australia has cut emissions at almost double the rate of other developed countries.
To reach net zero by 2050, we’d have to double this rate again – reducing emissions by 17 million tonnes per year, up from the 9 million tonnes averaged over the last twenty years.
Australia should be a country where we use Australian resources to help Australians first.
We will adopt a balanced energy mix, harnessing all available energy technologies to make energy affordable. This includes:
- Renewables in the right place.
- Hydro and storage.
- Gas generation, and new gas supply by unlocking more exploration and infrastructure, and an east coast gas reservation scheme – to prioritise more supply for Australians.
- No premature closure of coal plants, which provide critical baseload power.
- Lifting the ban on zero-emissions nuclear energy, which 19 of the world’s 20 largest economies are either using or moving toward. By lifting the ban, it can be considered as an option for investment.
We remain committed to the Paris Agreement and to doing our fair share to reduce emissions in a way that protects household budgets and keeps our economy strong.
Under our plan, emissions will be reduced:
- On average year on year, for every five year period of Australia’s Nationally Determined Contribution.
- In Australia’s national interest by doing our fair share considering the real performance of OECD countries.
- As fast and as far as technology allows, without imposing mandated costs on families or industry.
Whilst it is not our policy to set long-term targets, Net Zero would be a welcome outcome, if achieved through technology, choice and voluntary markets.
This is the Coalition’s vision for Australia’s energy future: affordable power, responsible emissions reduction and a practical, balanced path that strengthens the country.
