For survivors of suicide loss, there is a unique and powerful comfort that may be gained by being in the presence of others who have experienced this complex type of loss.

Saturday, November 22 is [International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day]([link removed]), also known as “Survivor Day,” with in-person events taking place around the world, bringing suicide loss survivors together to gain understanding and support each other’s healing journeys. Some people attend every year as a way of honoring their loved one, checking in with themselves, and healthily recognizing the way their feelings evolve over time.

Attending a Survivor Day event for the first time may evoke feelings of hesitation. In an article for AFSP’s Real Stories blog, AFSP volunteer Karen Pantello described her own experience attending Survivor Day for the first time, after the loss of her husband:

“I sat in the parking lot for 30 minutes, scared and crying. What in the world was I doing? I didn’t want to talk to people, I was tired of crying, and I just wanted to sleep without having nightmares. I looked at the flyer again: International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. My daughter had seen the information online from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and suggested I go, because, as she said, ‘Mom, I don’t know how to help you not be sad.’… The next year, I didn’t just return to my local Survivor Day event: I volunteered to help with it!” (Read Karen’s full story [here]([link removed]).)

In addition to in-person events, AFSP also hosts Survivor Day Live, a virtual experience bringing communities together from across the world through Facebook and YouTube Live; as well as Día de Esperanza (Day of Hope), on the day before, featuring a Spanish language panel discussion about the perspectives on mental health and suicide loss in Hispanic and Latinx culture.

We hope you’ll attend your local in-person event, as well as tune in for these virtual programs.
