This better not be a preview of the presidential election. Here's how Wisconsin's vote-by-mail efforts went wrong. "The U.S. Postal Service’s internal watchdog released a report on July 7 detailing the failures of Wisconsin’s mail-in ballot system. The report found that many voters either received their ballots late or not at all, with some being sent to the wrong destination. There were four major problems with the attempt detailed in the report, two of which occurred in Milwaukee." (The Daily Wire) It's highly likely that the 2020 presidential election will have an unprecedented number of ballots cast by mail. Democrats have done all they can to boost that plan -- and dismissed Republican concerns as scare tactics or falsehoods.
But every week seems to bring a new story about mail-in ballot issues, like the results of this watchdog report on voting by mail in Wisconsin:
-- one city had 400 ballots with "issues, including missing or illegible postmarks and some that lacked a postmark date"
-- and, in that same city, ballot requests seemed not to go through if they were made on March 22 or March 23 (the USPS suggested a "computer glitch")
-- in another Wisconsin city, 750 ballots weren't delivered in time for voters to cast them
-- and in that same city (but a different community), 160 ballots weren't given to voters but went to an election office
It's primary day in Alabama, Maine, and Texas. Here's what's at stake. "Democrats will all but finalize their roster of candidates for a Senate takeover bid in Tuesday’s primaries. They will pick a candidate to take on Sen. Susan Collins in Maine, with state House Speaker Sara Gideon the heavy favorite to win that state’s ranked-choice primary. Democrats will also pick a nominee in Texas — amid a push to turn the state blue in 2020, two years after Beto O’Rourke nearly knocked off Sen. Ted Cruz." (POLITICO) And, in addition to the Democrats choosing candidates for high-profile general elections this fall, Republicans are watching the Alabama Senate primary.
Jeff Sessions, former U.S. Attorney General and Senator from Alabama, wants to return to office. But President Trump has endorsed his primary opponent: Tommy Tuberville, the former football coach at Auburn University.
Planned Parenthood is running a "five-figure digital ad campaign" -- as part of a $45M effort -- in support of Biden. "Planned Parenthood Votes is backing presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden with a five-figure digital ad campaign in key battleground states as the former vice-president prepares to face off with President Donald Trump." (Daily Caller) If you were wondering about Joe Biden's policy on protecting life, you likely have your answer now. Planned Parenthood announced a "five-figure" digital ad buy in support of Biden in key swing states like Colorado, Florida, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina.
In total, it's reported that Planned Parenthood will spend $45 million backing Biden in the 2020 election.
Trump campaign and RNC are on a hiring boost. "The Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee (RNC) are building a massive ground operation to work for President Trump's reelection this fall, even as the coronavirus pandemic changes how physical campaigning is practiced." (The Hill) The Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee have hired 300 new field staff, bringing the total to about 1,500 staff devoted to on-the-ground political work ahead of the presidential election.
COVID-19 had slowed the "ground game" efforts of many campaigns, which are built around voter contact efforts like door-knocking. But it seems that, as America gets back to work, so too do the campaigns!
