I’m Alex Rias, the new director of Civil, Human and Women’s Rights at the AFL-CIO. And that means I’ll be helping to lead our 2026 AFL-CIO Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Civil and Human Rights Conference this January in Baltimore.

The theme for this conference is “Honoring Our History—Fighting for Our Future.” And it couldn’t be more appropriate for the moment we’re in, as the labor and civil rights movements stand at a critical juncture on Dr. King’s moral arc bending toward justice.

Throughout my career, I’ve fought to protect civil rights, pursue equal justice under the law and organize an empowered workforce for a more equitable future.
