Friend,
This week, our opponent Jason Smith announced that he co-authored the Reopen Our Schools Act, a short-sighted bill that withholds federal education funding from K-12 schools unless they reopen classes in-person.

This is shameful, dangerous, and irresponsible. But it gets worse. Just three months ago, Smith said in an interview with Public Radio [[link removed]] , “I don’t think the federal government should be the one to say, ‘You’re open for business.’ I don’t think it’s the state’s job, either."

So which is it, Jason? Should the federal government force a decision to reopen?

Our first priority for the coming school year should be the health and safety of America’s students, teachers, and school staff. As Rep. Smith himself wrote in a statement [[link removed]] , “there is no universal solution for all schools across this country,” so it follows that local schools should be allowed to decide if online learning is safest for their students without fear of their funding being stripped by the federal government.

There is no place for ideologies in Congress during a public health crisis. We need effective leaders who have the safety of the people in mind. [[link removed]]
