![]() The Washington Post: “White House fires arts commission expected to review Trump construction projects” Just over a week ago, the White House fired all employees of the independent federal agency that was expected to review some of President Trump’s construction projects, including his White House ballroom.
Since the start of his second term, Trump has sought to remake the federal government by firing high-level appointees who keep our government running, including watchdogs, ethics officials and nonpolitical advisors. These firings range from a board member of the National Labor Relations Board to the FEC chair to the Bureau of Labor Statistics commissioner. These firings are an unprecedented attack on independent agencies and government accountability. And some of them are likely illegal. But the Trump administration doesn’t seem to care. In fact, the administration hasn’t been shy about its desire to overturn Humphrey’s Executor v. U.S., which would end independent agencies as we know them and allow presidents to install allies to positions that are explicitly designed to be apolitical. Let’s be clear about what’s happening here, John: the president is firing political appointees in an effort to fundamentally remake the federal government to suit his own authoritarian aims.
