Hello again readers,
Wanted to send everyone a reminder that we’re in the midst of the biggest (and smallest!) sale in the history of this newsletter. Instead of a flat discount, I’m offering all free subscribers a range of discounts to choose from. What fun!
Are you a rational and unsentimental economic actor? Smash that 65 percent off button! Maybe you think Off Message is good but overpriced, or a little bit out of budget, yet you want to signal your appreciation for the newsletter. In that case, click one of the other buttons! Heck, maybe you meant to sign up at full price, or as a founder, many weeks ago, but have been dragging your feet. If so, skip the sale altogether and sign up without accepting any of these offers.
You can even buy one membership for yourself at one price and a gift membership for a friend or family member at a different one. Click the “gift” button after you select your coupon and make someone in your life a little smarter and better informed. The sky’s the truly limit.
To those of you who are curious, about three-fifths of purchasers so far have chosen to take me to the cleaners—no shame in that at all. It’s also heartening to know that many of you both want to be a member and want the site to succeed and grow, and have thus been willing to chip in a little more than the minimum.
Remember, too: if you don’t want to create a Substack account, or don’t want Substack to take a cut, but you do want to read our emails in full, I’ve created a backdoor. From here on out, you can make a direct donation [ [link removed] ] to Off Message, and for the remainder of this week I will comp anyone who donates $25 or more with a one-year subscription. All of our articles, no more paywalls.
A similar pattern has emerged in this group, too. The modal donor this week has given $25. But plenty of you have ponied up a little extra, and a few have even donated the normal annual subscription cost of $75. No matter your means or inclinations, I am deeply indebted to all of you—even those of you who choose not to take me up on any of these offers at this time. Our free readers make us more visible, and that visibility is a big part of how we change minds.
With all my gratitude,
Brian
