John,
After more than 6 weeks, Trump’s government shutdown has ended. But after all of the pain Trump perpetrated on the American people―from illegally withholding SNAP funds to illegally firing federal workers to threatening to withhold backpay from furloughed workers―the pain will not end when the government re-opens.
Health insurance costs will double for 20 million Americans under Republicans’ government funding bill, aided by a handful of Democrats. This so-called deal does nothing to protect vulnerable people from the Medicaid and SNAP cuts passed in Trump’s Big Budget Betrayal, which will kick 17 million Americans off their healthcare.
Instead of holding the line and fighting for healthcare as a human right, moderate Democrats negotiated this deal with Senate Republicans.
The only agreement they got was an empty promise of a Senate vote on extending the Affordable Care Act subsidies which expire at the end of the year, and Republicans are already pushing poison pills along with that vote. We must pressure Congress to hold and pass these votes now.
Join me in demanding the House and Senate vote immediately to protect working families by extending the enhanced ACA subsidies, which have been keeping healthcare more affordable for tens of millions of people.
Open enrollment on the Affordable Care Act Marketplace is currently underway across the country, and many people are seeing their premiums more than double starting January 1st. If Congress lets the ACA subsidies expire, millions of Americans will be unable to afford health insurance, and many will die unnecessarily.
In addition, while the ACA subsidies have been critical to keeping healthcare costs lower, there are plenty of families in my district who are still paying a lot more than they should.
That’s why I’m fighting for transformative changes like Medicare for All and ending medical debt. We need a healthcare system that puts patient care before corporate profits, and the only way we will do that is by enacting Medicare for All.
While we continue to grow our movement for Medicare for All, we’re in the midst of a healthcare affordability crisis, and Congress must act now. Add your name to demand an immediate vote on extending the enhanced ACA subsidies so 20 million Americans can continue to afford their health insurance.
Thank you for being by my side as, together, we demand a healthcare system that puts people first and guarantees healthcare as a human right.
With you in this fight,
Rashida
