AI and democratic decision-making:

Steering responsible change

an image of a brain made to look like a computer motherboard

As you'll be aware, AI is everywhere. That includes our own government, who have pledged to "mainline AI into the veins of the nation".

We first founded mySociety back in 2003 when the internet was still a reasonably new concept, to show government how digital technologies could be done well.

And now, as we find ourselves witnessing the early stages of this huge piece of digital transformation at every level of government? Once again, we see the need to keep a watchful eye.

Over the next few months, we’ll be sharing our own research, reflections and experience — alongside invited guest writers — to consider how AI interacts with democratic processes, and what is needed to make that better.

AI and Government - the words superimposed on an image of a glowing motherboard

Here's where we begin. AI is coming to democracy, whether we like it or not. But there are ways in which it can be highly beneficial to us all; and ways in which it can present a clear and present danger to democracy. Read more.

Transparency rules need to adapt - text superimposed on an image of question marks scattered across a dark background. A few of them are glowing hot red.

And then: find out why our transparency laws need to urgently adapt to this new era, in a piece for Public Technology from our Chief Executive Louise. Read more.

These pieces signal the start of a significant series of thought pieces, events, research and experimentation from mySociety, around the topic of AI and democratic decision-making.

Last time we asked:

How well do you know your MP?

6.4% I know everything about them; 15% I don't even know their name; 38.2% I can tell you their name but not much else; 40.5% I know what they think about the issues I care about

Thank you for your responses to our straw poll in the last email.

With the updates we’ve been making to TheyWorkForYou, we hope that more of you will soon be confidently joining the 6.4% who say they know everything about their MP — after all, that’s what we’re here for!

Why not check out your MP’s page now (put in your postcode on the homepage) and see what you can learn about them?
