John,

I just voted NO on the Republican shutdown spending bill. I’d like to explain why.

In the next few days, over 20 million Americans will receive notices from their health insurers informing them that on December 31st, the Affordable Care Act tax credits will expire. As a result, hard working American’s premiums, co-pays, and deductibles are about to skyrocket, preventing many from being able to access the healthcare they need.

House Democrats have been united in our mission to lower the cost of healthcare. We fought to stop Trump’s Big Ugly Budget Bill from making the largest Medicaid cuts in American history. We fought to protect SNAP. We fought to stop Trump’s NIH cuts. And now, we are fighting to stop health insurance prices from going through the roof.

We’ve consistently told Republicans that any bipartisan spending deal would need to include an extension of the Affordable Care Act tax credits. But they ignored us.

As a result of Congressional Republican’s refusal to address the healthcare crisis they created, millions of people are going to see health insurance costs balloon. Many won't be able to afford a doctor when they or their children need one. Many will cancel their health insurance plans, resulting in overcrowded emergency rooms for preventable medical emergencies.

Now to take a step back - one year ago, Republicans won control of the White House, the Senate, and the U.S. House of Representatives. In doing so, they took an oath to responsibly govern these United States of America.

Trump and Congressional Republicans have every lever of power. They could have prevented this shutdown from happening. They could have reopened the government at any time. Instead, they’re playing political games.

To put it simply, Republicans shut the government down because they do not want working class Americans to have affordable healthcare.

On day one, Trump promised to lower the high cost of living, but costs continue to go up. Housing costs are through the roof. Grocery prices through the roof. Electricity costs through the roof. And now, unprecedented increases in health insurance costs. But Republicans don’t care.

My Democratic colleagues and I are working hard to ensure that every branch of government is working to lift up the quality of life of everyday Americans.

Everyday, we’re fighting for our collective future. That’s why I voted no tonight. I hope you’ll join me as I continue to fight for our future.
