Dear Readers,
This week, I come bearing some good news for a change. The National Council of Nonprofits has stepped up as a leader, advocate and defender of our sector as the Trump administration and its GOP allies in Congress continue their attacks.
Last week, the NCN joined a coalition of nonprofits to sue the Trump administration ([link removed]) over newly announced regulations that would allow the Trump-appointed US Education Secretary to deny access to the federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program for employees of organizations deemed, arbitrarily and unilaterally, to be somehow associated with “substantial illegal purpose.” This is yet another vaguely defined phrase being used to target organizations and activities viewed as ideologically opposed to the White House agenda.
The same week, another lawsuit filed by NCN and partners over the Trump administration’s refusal to fund federal food assistance (SNAP) payments during the ongoing government shutdown, scored a significant victory ([link removed]) when the federal judge hearing that case issued a temporary injunction requiring the government to utilize emergency funds to at least partially fund the program.
On the topic of lawsuits, We the Action, a project of Civic Nation, is helping nonprofits access a network of thousands of volunteer lawyers ready to help organizations navigate the turbid waters in which we find ourselves swimming for life.
