Today, COP30 kicks off in Brazil with billions of lives and futures on the line. Right-wing authoritarianism is on the rise across the globe, so we need to work harder than ever to show people that climate action can benefit them.  
 

This must be the year of concrete progress towards a globally just transition. That means a fossil fuel phase-out that benefits ordinary people in the UK and globally. It means overhauling systems that allow polluting corporations and the super-rich to go on profiting and polluting, and making them pay for the damage they have knowingly done to billions globally. 
 

Global plans for emissions reductions are far from where they need to be. Only a fraction of the global climate funding required has been pledged, let alone delivered. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband has taken some positive steps to fight climate change at home, but a just transition is still far from reach, and all efforts are mired by corporate control over our energy and trade systems. 
 

But there is hope. Since COP began 30 years ago, global heating projections have reduced by several degrees. This is undeniably thanks to activists and movements all around the world, who over many decades have refused to give up the fight for all of our futures. 
 

The UK government has gone to COP30 making its usual claims of climate leadership. We need to use the next two weeks to highlight where it is falling far short and pressure it to do far better. We need to demand global systems change that can take the power out of the hands of corporations and billionaires, and put it back into the hands of the people. 
 

1. Take Make Them Pay into your local community - mobilise for the day of action on 15 November
 

On Saturday 15 November, people across the world will take to the streets as part of the Global Day of Action during COP30. Here in the UK, we can show that tackling the cost of living and tackling the climate crisis go hand in hand, and that urgent action is affordable if we make the richest pay. 14 events are now happening across the UK, including a major demonstration in Glasgow. We cannot allow the government to claim climate leadership on the global stage while the Rosebank oilfield is still on the table. Oil giant Equinor has resubmitted its application to develop this climate catastrophe, and the government is taking views from the public until 20 November. This is the last chance to stop Rosebank. Use our action to write Keir Starmer a message, which will be included in the formal consultation response:  

Many of you have been part of our trade campaign against the corporate courts used by fossil fuel firm to block climate action – and pocket $80 billion and counting of public money. Alongside the Colombian government, we are hosting an event at COP30 to highlight the danger of these investor claims working against the aims of the summit, and to encourage more governments to join the growing pushback. In this year that oil, gas and mining companies have hit a record-breaking number of claims, the UK must finally join other governments in confronting this systemic obstacle to climate action. 

In 2020, Liz Truss promised £900 million in funding to Mozambique LNG, a carbon bomb waiting to happen which has been mired in controversy for years. Total Energies, the oil giant which owns the project, has been accused of failing to protect subcontractors during civil unrest and soldiers Total contracted to protect the project have been accused of killing and seriously abusing Mozambican civilians. While the UK government is at COP, we need to highlight the shameful fact that it is still committed to funding a project that would be a climate and human rights disaster.
