California’s most iconic wild horse herds are under threat of mass roundups and removals. After years of being terrorized by brutal helicopter round ups, only 3,000 wild horses remain in the entire state of California. 

Without intervention, the bloodlines of these iconic herds could be lost forever. Will you sign our petition to Governor Newsom and the California state legislature’s leadership calling on them to protect California’s wild herds and recognize their cultural, ecological and historical importance?

The Mono Lake wild horses, living in the shadow of the Sierra Nevada, could soon face capture and confinement. The United States Forest Service (USFS) is moving forward with cruel and unnecessary helicopter removals that traumatize wild horses and the deep cultural importance these animals hold to the local tribal communities. Once these horses are rounded up, they’ll be trucked to government holding pens to live the rest of their lives in confinement.

The Devil’s Garden Herd — one of California’s most historic wild populations — has been consistently targeted by the U.S. Forest Service. AWHC has been involved in litigation to protect this historic herd. During this year’s roundup federal officials have added severe restrictions on public observation. Transparency is not optional — it is the law.

Perhaps more than any other California herd in recent years, the Twin Peaks wild horses have been ravaged by some of the most brutal roundup operations. AWHC’s Freedom of Information Act Records revealed an additional 69 horses died from roundup-related deaths during the 2022 removal. Foals bore the brunt of this brutality, with many dying from running over long distances in extreme heat.
