Dear John,
I’m writing to you today to share an urgent warning about what may be Donald Trump’s most dangerously authoritarian power grab yet: NSPM-7.
Under NSPM-7, Trump labels a terrifyingly broad range of political speech as indicia of “domestic terrorism” and directs the FBI and other federal law enforcement to investigate and disrupt nonprofit organizations, donors, and activists who may be guilty of such thought crimes.
A sermon, a protest sign, an op-ed in a student paper, or even a donation to a social justice or environmental group could be held up as “evidence” of disloyalty.
It’s like something out of a dystopian novel, but the corporate media has almost totally ignored it.
So Inequality Media Civic Action is sounding the alarm and urging Congress to take action now to defend our First Amendment rights.
To help launch this effort, I’m asking you to make a monthly donation to Inequality Media Civic Action to educate the public and fund our campaign to stop NSPM-7.
NSPM-7 directs the attorney general to investigate organizations, funders, and activists who hold such vaguely political beliefs as “anti-capitalism and anti-Christianity,” “extremism on migration, race, and gender,” and opposition to “traditional American views on family, religion, and morality.”
It’s alarmingly reminiscent of the McCarthy-era witch hunts, when Americans were blacklisted, silenced, and ruined for expressing their opinions.
Trump has already made clear whom he considers the enemy. He’s called Democrats “vermin,” “scum,” and “the enemy within.” He’s told members of the Navy and the Marines to “take care of this little gnat on our shoulder called the Democrats.”
Such rhetoric isn’t just petty or divisive — it’s highly dangerous, especially when paired with a presidential memo designed to give those words the force of law.
Inequality Media Civic Action has launched an urgent effort to sound the alarm about NSPM-7, educate the public, and demand that Congress take action to stop these abuses — and we’re counting on your support to help fund our efforts.
Will you join with me and make a monthly donation to Inequality Media Civic Action today?
Thank you,
Robert Reich
