John,
As voters in California and New Jersey cast their ballots on Tuesday, the Trump administration was on hand to "monitor" the polls — the latest example of this regime's weaponization of the Department of Justice and its undermining of the right to vote.
This is becoming a part of the Republican playbook. Voter intimidation and false claims of voter fraud — all designed to undercut the will of the people. And make no mistake: This is part and parcel with their strategy in states like Texas, Missouri, and North Carolina to rig congressional maps so they can’t lose.
We have to stand firm against these attacks on democracy. We must call this out loudly for what it is: An attempt to intimidate voters and, potentially, a trial run for a bigger intimidation operation in the 2026 midterms.
Help us prepare for any attempt by extremists to silence voters’ voices — in map manipulation or beyond. Make a donation so the NDRC can continue fighting the Trump administration’s anti-democracy schemes.
The Department of Justice has a long history of defending Americans’ voting rights — from safeguarding the rights of voters with disabilities to protecting voters from threats and coercion.
The Trump administration has, unfortunately, completely reversed this trend. Instead, they are weaponizing the DOJ to pass more restrictive voting rules and clear the way for more voter suppression at the state level. It’s even pushing the Supreme Court to gut the Voting Rights Act.
Taken together with Trump’s pressure on states to redistrict, it’s clear that these efforts are part of a coordinated attack to make it harder for voters to make their voices heard — particularly voters of color.
This latest attack to send “federal election observers” to California and New Jersey — for non-federal elections — is just the latest evidence that the Trump administration is terrified of letting voters have their say.
The NDRC will never back down from standing up for voting rights — but this work takes enormous resources, especially now. Your donation will help us fight back against ongoing threats to democracy while preparing for whatever attacks on voting rights the Trump administration has planned: [[link removed]]
