The Rise of Antisemitism within the United States

For perhaps the first time in our history, the Jewish community in the United States is feeling besieged by unprecedented attacks on both the extreme left, and the extreme right. The Jewish community of New York City, the largest community of Jews outside of Israel, is feeling frightened, abandoned and confused. Tucker Carlson has given the white supremacist, and Holocaust-denier, Nick Fuentes a welcome embrace, and Kevin Roberts of the Heritage Foundation had uncritically defended Tucker Carlson. This has led to several resignations within Heritage, and, after a week of outrage, a later apology from Kevin Roberts. There is also a growing isolationist trend within republican politics. We are seeing a civil war within the right.

However, that right-wing “civil war” pales in comparison to the woke embrace of radical left-wing socialists who are sympathetic to radical Islamists on the left. The recent mayoral election in New York of Zohran Mamdani has us greatly alarmed. Mr. Mamdani has made inflammatory statements regarding the state of Israel, calling what is happening in Gaza a “genocide”. While a student at Bowdoin College, he formed an alliance with the radical left-wing Jewish group J Street and subsequently shut the alliance down. He has made deftly-crafted statements such as, “My support for BDS is consistent with the core of my politics, which is nonviolence. And I think that it is a legitimate movement when you are seeking to find compliance with international law.” He is attempting to threaten the partnership of Cornell and the Technion in Haifa, and has vowed to “arrest” Prime Minister Netanyahu, if he even lands in New York. Based on interviews in the New York Times, his words represent the views of
thousands of Muslims throughout the United States.

In August of 1790, President George Washington wrote a letter to the congregation of Newport, Rhode Island, saying “May the children of the stock of Abraham who dwell in this land continue to merit and enjoy the good will of the other inhabitants—while every one shall sit in safety under his own vine and fig tree and there shall be none to make him afraid.”

Are we, Jews of America, still feeling that same sense of “safety” today?
