Before we go, let’s highlight a few of the historic wins that broke barriers in representation and leadership.
✅ Abigail Spanberger is the first woman to be elected governor of Virginia, and Ghazala Hashmi is the first Muslim woman to win a statewide race in the United States. This marks the first time Virginia will have both a woman governor and lieutenant governor at the same time.
✅ Zohran Mamdani was elected the first Muslim mayor and first South Asian mayor of New York City.
✅ With the election of Abigail Spanberger in Virginia and Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey, there are now a record number of female governors: 14!
✅ Women broke barriers in mayoral elections. Sharon Owens and Dorcey Applyrs were elected the first Black mayors of Syracuse and Albany. Mary Sheffield made history as the first woman to be elected mayor in Detroit. Kaohly Her made history as the first woman mayor and first Hmong mayor in St. Paul, Christal Watson became the the first Black woman to be mayor of Wyandotte County in Kansas, and Kristi Cox was elected the first woman to be mayor of Richmond Hill in Georgia.
✅ Maine voted to protect voting rights and strengthen gun violence prevention.
✅ California voters approved Proposition 50, which puts a new congressional map into effect through 2030.
