Ratepayers in both New Jersey and Virginia have faced brutal price hikes—and there was no shying away from that in this year’s elections. Tying their opponents’ support for failing anti-clean-energy policies in Washington to rising costs at home, Sherrill and Spanberger led with commonsense plans to lower costs through clean energy. Plans that leaders across the country should take a page from right now.
Sherrill promised bold action to drive down utility costs with a massive build-out of cleaner, cheaper energy, and vowed to take on utilities and PJM—New Jersey’s grid operator—to get it done. Meanwhile, Spanberger made energy a top issue in her affordability platform, including expanding local clean energy generation and calling on data centers to bring their own clean generation.
The takeaway?
Clean energy isn’t an abstract issue. It’s not only our best tool to continue tackling the climate crisis—it’s also our best tool to drive down costs. These leaders ran and won on clean energy as an affordability solution.
Governors-elect Mikie Sherrill and Abigail Spanberger owned this winning issue—now it’s up to them to deliver, and for leaders across the country to take up the mantle.
