In the middle of what is set to be the longest shutdown in our nation’s history—a shutdown he caused—Donald Trump demolished the East Wing of the White House to make room for a $300 million ballroom for his megadonors.

What a metaphor for everything he has done to tear down the middle class while lining the pockets of his billionaire buddies.

I’m sorry to remind you, but we cannot look away from the literal destruction he has caused.

Trump manufactured this shutdown, guaranteeing that health care prices would skyrocket. Now, he is refusing to lift a finger to fund SNAP and stop American children from going hungry—even though federal courts have ordered him to.

The contrast between his wasteful, egomaniacal stunts and the lived experiences of American families could not be clearer.

Back when I was in high school, my family struggled. I am only a Senator today because the basic needs programs like SNAP were there when my family needed them.

Millions of people rely on these programs that he intentionally broke, but Trump is more focused on building a gilded ballroom that nobody asked for in what should be “The People’s House.” It’s shameful.

That’s why I’m determined to advocate for middle class families and hold Trump accountable as U.S. Senator. But this is not work I can do alone, John.
