Office of the Texas Governor, Governor's Committee on People with Disabilities
Honoring Our Texas Caregivers

Each November, we observe National Family Caregivers Month – a time set aside to recognize and uplift the millions of people who give of themselves so others may live with dignity.

In Texas, family and unpaid caregivers are a vital part of our health-and-disability support system. By assisting with activities of daily living, medical care, emotional support, and maintaining quality of life for loved ones with disabilities or chronic health conditions, caregivers meet a need that is both immense and often invisible.

Caregiving comes with rewards including, deep connection and the comfort of knowing you are supporting someone you love, but it also comes with challenges such as fatigue, emotional stress, juggling work/family/health, and figuring out how to access the right supports.

The Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities emphasizes connecting caregivers of people with developmental disabilities [ [link removed] ] to training, peer networks and community services. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HSCC) encourages caregivers [ [link removed] ] and care recipients to talk about future planning (such as long-term care options) and to make use of respite, training and support programs.

_Resources for Caregivers in Texas_

* The “Strengthen the Care You Give” campaign [ [link removed] ] (via HHSC) is an online hub where caregivers can find training, self-care strategies, collaboration tools, and peer support.
* HHSC Aging & Disability Resource Centers [ [link removed] ] across the state provide information on respite, housing assistance, transportation, personal care services, and are a gateway to local supports.

"Texas caregivers embody the true spirit of love and service,” said Texas First Lady Cecilia Abbott. “Across Texas, caregivers bring comfort and support to families and communities every day, serving as a lifeline often without recognition. During Family Caregivers Month, we honor these heroes who devote themselves to the care of others and thank them for the grace and compassion they show every day."

This November, we commit to raising awareness, improving access to supports, and strengthening connections so caregivers are seen, supported and valued.
