John,

“As the federal shutdown stretched into its fifth week, imperiling the nation’s largest anti-hunger program, Vice President JD Vance insisted that there was little the White House could do to help.

“‘The American people are already suffering,” he told reporters, “and the suffering is going to get a lot worse.’

“In fact, the administration had billions of dollars at its disposal — more, by its own admission, than it needed to sustain food stamps for the roughly 42 million low-income people who depend on them. And it was only after a federal judge intervened that President Trump signaled he could use the money for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP.”

That's reporting from yesterday's edition of The New York Times, exposing what we already know—Trump always had the power to fund food stamps, even with the government shutdown, but he would rather people go hungry in order to try to score political points.

It's cruel and entirely unnecessary. But while we can't change the situation overnight, we can take two important steps.

We can help our neighbors by doing what we can to fund what little of a safety net we still have. We can donate to foodbanks, fill free fridges, and contribute to community potlucks.

Donate to feed our neighbors

And we can organize, in order to build the political power to ensure we're not in the same position four years from now, with politicians who think feeding children is a bargaining chip.

Ground Game Texas is building power at the local level, engaging communities, and getting out the vote. Together we're creating a Texas that works for working Texans.

Donate to fuel the movement

We’re organizing, city by city, to bring power back to the people. From anti-corruption campaigns to defending democracy, we’re proving that when Texans organize, we win.

In solidarity,

The Ground Game Texas Team
