Dear Friend,

Last month, I joined millions of Americans, including many from the J
Street community, in perhaps the largest pro-democracy protest America has
ever seen. 

Make no mistake: We’re in the throes of a titanic battle to defend strong
democracy, freedom and human rights – both at home and, as J Street knows
well, all over the world, including in Israel.

Across the country, we’re seeing constant authoritarian and fascist
attacks on our democratic rights and freedom.

Troops on our streets. Disappearances without due process. Authoritarian
redistricting. Attacks on healthcare and reproductive rights. Efforts to
cut whole swaths of our society out of the political process.

And now, more promises of political prosecutions and crackdowns on
opponents of the incumbent regime.

I get a lot of questions about the state of democracy. Is our system fit
to meet challenges we face? Can we withstand Trump’s assaults? I don’t
know what’s to come, but I know we are winning every day.

Each generation of Americans has had to fight to make democracy real.
Building a more perfect union has always been the central imperative in
our history.

We’re winning in the courts on everything from birthright citizenship to
book bans to the illegal sacking of federal workers. When Trump’s
unconstitutional attacks on our democracy are challenged, we’re prevailing
overwhelmingly, with Trump recently losing six court cases within a single
week. True, we have real problems with the Roberts Court and their
emergency docket, but the rule of law still has vitality and meaning.

Millions of people just took to the streets to show the people reject
authoritarianism. We’re fighting to stop savage cuts to healthcare. We’re
still fighting for a better life for all Americans, while Trump fights for
right-wing power and his billionaire donors.

It’s an honor to be in this fight alongside everyone at J Street as we
fight to win elections and to defend elections. This is the fight of our
lives.

The problems we face today are not failures of democracy, but the result
of all the obstacles and impediments thrown up against democracy. Voter
suppression laws, gerrymandered districts, right-wing judicial activism,
corporate lobbying, manipulation of the obsolete Electoral College,
unlimited dark money that drowns out the voice of the people.

These practices block the will of the majority and distort our politics,
grinding the gears of our nation. They are enabling an authoritarian MAGA
agenda, and corroding civil rights and civil liberties. It’s time for
urgently needed democratic repair.

The vast majority of Americans are not racist, not antisemitic, not
misogynistic, not authoritarian. Most Americans want jobs, healthcare,
equality, freedom and progress – for everyone.

We must root out voter suppression, disenfranchisement from Puerto Rico to
Washington, DC, right-wing judicial activism, corporate dark money from
politics. We must deliver for working people.

I’m proud to stand with J Street in this fight – and I know that if we
stay the course together, we will win a victory in this century for strong
democracy and freedom, human rights and social progress.
